Woman Arrested for Misuse of 9-1-1

On 02-01-16 at approximately 2:18 a.m., Hernando County deputies responded to a residence on Everett Avenue in Spring Hill.

Upon arrival at the residence, deputies were met by paramedics from Spring Hill/Fire Rescue. Paramedics advised deputies that they (Fire/Rescue) had responded to the address several times over the last few days, and believed the resident, Carolee Hammond, was calling for their services on false pretenses.

Deputies requested a call log from the Emergency Communications Center. The call log showed this being Hammond’s sixth call to 9-1-1 since 01-28-16 at 2:02 a.m. During all calls, Hammond requested transport to the hospital.

While on scene for the current call, paramedics advised Hammond that she was not exhibiting any signs of medical duress and that her vital signs were normal. It was then that she advised paramedics that “she wanted a ride to the hospital to get some medicine.”

Paramedics advised deputies that Hammond had already been transported by ambulance to the hospital twice at her request, once on 01-30-16 and again on 01-31-16. Hammond was released from the hospital both times. Emergency Room Physicians told Paramedics that Hammond was not suffering from any medical conditions when she arrived at the hospital; therefore she was released soon after her arrival.

When Paramedics advised Hammond that she would not be transported for the sole reason to obtain medication, she declined any further medical assistance.

Deputies then spoke with Hammond once again. Hammond was advised that she would not be transported to the hospital (by ambulance) to obtain medication. Deputies advised Hammond that calling 9-1-1 to request this service is a misuse of 9-1-1, and that if she called again for this reason, she would be arrested for Misuse of 9-1-1.

On 02-01-16, at 3:52 a.m., deputies were again dispatched to Hammond’s residence. Hammond had called 9-1-1 again for medical services. Paramedics evaluated Hammond and determined that again, she was not suffering from any medical duress that required hospitalization.

Once medically cleared, Hammond was placed under arrest, charged with Misuse of 9-1-1. Her bond was set at $1,000.
