Explorer K-8 teacher arrested on DUI charge

Spring Hill –
An Explorer K-8 teacher was arrested Saturday and charged with driving under the influence.

Sheriff’s deputies stopped a Toyota Highlander driven by Ramia Vasquez, 37, near the intersection of Landfair Street and Curry Drive. The sheriff’s report said Vasquez was speeding and he noticed she was impaired.

A traffic unit arrived and detected a moderate odor of alcohol on her breath. She had red, watery eyes and walked slightly unbalanced, the report said.

Vasquez agreed to a field sobriety test, which showed she was impaired. She told deputies she had one draft beer at the Mariner Lanes Bowling Alley.

Vasquez, who served as Explorer’s JV girls basketball coach the past two seasons, was transported to the Hernando County Jail and held on $500 bond.

Vasquez was given a breathalyzer, which revealed an alcohol level of .092 and .099, according to a sheriff’s report.

The legal limit in Florida is .08.
