Miracle Sports released its All-State softball teams this month, with several Hernando County players earning selections.

In Class 6A, regional finalist Springstead was represented by three players: senior pitcher and two-time Hernando Today Player of the Year Alexis Adams as well as senior outfielder Victoria Meese on the second team, and freshman catcher Brooke Fischbach netting an honorable mention.

Central junior outfielder Katie McCarthy, the county’s leading hitter at .564, was also on the 6A second team.

Hernando sophomore pitcher Courtney Riddle was an honorable mention in 5A, and Hernando Christian Academy pitcher Ashley McKay and catcher Holly Field, both coming off their junior seasons, made the 2A second team.

HCRD summer camps

BROOKSVILLE The Hernando County Recreation Department has had several youth sports camps available this summer. Additional weeks have been added at the request of parents and campers.

A basketball camp run by Marion Jones, Michael Jones and Calvin Brown. Fundamentals of the game, skills and drills will be taught, followed by scrimmage games Monday through Thursday.

The camp will be held at West Hernando Middle School Aug. 6-9.

Cost is $65 per week. Camp hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Extended hours of 7:30 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 4 p.m. are available for an extra $10.

A volleyball camp, run by Hernando High head coach Patti Martin and assistant coach Robin Bailey, that will teach fundamentals of the game of volleyball, daily drills and skills, followed by daily interleague games. The camp takes place July 30-Aug. 2 at Challenger.

Cost is $65 per week. Camp hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Extended hours of 7:30 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 4 p.m. are available for an extra $10.

A sports camp, featuring a mixed bag of sports including basketball, flag football, soccer, dodge ball and kickball, will take place July 30-Aug. 2.

Flag football tournament

OLDSMAR The USSSA Summer Elite 4-on-4 Flag Football Tournament will take place Saturday and Sunday in Oldsmar.

Teams from all over the state will be playing for USSSA points, with a chance to qualify for end of year state and national championships. Age groups will be split into divisions for elimination play where possible.

Suncoast Select College Placement tryouts

SPRING HILL The Suncoast Select College Placement teams will be holding tryouts for the 2013-16 graduating classes, Aug. 5 and 12 at Shady Hills Little League’s fields, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on both days.

The Suncoast Select 18U & Underclass (16U) teams will be participating in three Perfect Game showcases, the Under Armour Invitational, 4-5 tournaments throughout the fall as well as games with local junior colleges.

Suncoast Select is also looking for 2016’s (15U) to compete in select fall tournaments.

All teams will be gearing up for the Summer 2013 travel/showcase circuit beginning Memorial Day weekend in Fort Myers through the end of July.

New HCA baseball coach holding camp

BROOKSVILLE To help introduce himself to the Hernando Christian Academy family and the Hernando County community, new Lions head baseball coach Tony Alvarez is having a baseball camp on July 31-Aug. 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The camp is open to everyone from third through 12th grades. There will be coaching and instruction for all levels of players given by Coach Alvarez, along with former Division I and Minor League pitchers and position players.

The cost of the camp is $40.

Firearms safety classes

BROOKSVILLE The Hernando Sportsman’s Club is offering several firearms safety classes during the summer.

Class dates include Aug. 1 and Aug. 18. All classes are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hernando Sportsman’s Club,16121 Commercial Way.

The course covers lessons about the basics of firearms safety around the home and the fundamentals of pistol shooting. The class includes practice time on the range.

The cost is $60. Successful completion of this class also provides required documentation to apply for aFloridaconcealed carry permit if desired.

Learn how to become an umpire

SPRING HILL Hernando Sumter Umpires Association, the largest baseball/softball umpires association in the West Central Florida area, is holding several umpire clinics for men and women over the age of 16 who want to become a baseball or softball umpire. An HSUA umpire can make an average of $20 per hour working part-time.

HSUA has enlisted the help of a former pro umpire, “Bugsy” Segal, the owner of umpireteacher.com. Segal has over 23 years of instructional experience and has conducted several umpire-training camps on a national level. He brings to HSUA over 36 years of umpiring experience and has umpired in over 500 pro games.

HSUA deals with over 18 leagues in Hernando, Citrus, Sumter and Pasco counties, and currently has over 90 umpires on its roster.

Camps will be held Aug. 5 at Ernie Wever Youth Park, Aug. 12 at Anderson Snow Sports Complex, Aug. 19 at Ridge Manor Community Park, Aug. 25 at Wesley Chapel District Park, Sept. 2 at Anderson Snow Sports Complex, Sept. 8 at Wesley Chapel District Park and Sept. 9 at Lake Panasoffkee Community Center.

During these clinics lasting more than three hours, the students will be taught and tested on the rules of the game. All of the participants will take a 100-question test based on Major League Baseball, high school, AAU, USSSA, Dixie Baseball and Softball, and Little League rules, and they will receive a MLB rulebook, positional charts and many more handouts.

The cost of these clinics is $20 per person. These events will have limited seating and registration is required.

Longboat Key Club and Resort hosts triathlon

LONG BOAT KEY As a new addition to the International Triathlon and Duathlon Distance Race that will be taking place Oct. 28, Longboat Key Club and Resort will be offering two training courses for participants of the event.

There will be two orientation sessions offered that will give an oversight of what to expect when participating in a triathlon, and the steps to take now in order to compete at peak performance.

Eric Kahl, a Sarasota-based USAT Level 1 coach and certified personal trainer with over 15 years experience in triathlon training, will be leading both the orientation sessions and the training courses.

The courses will cover nutrition counseling, interval training strategies, biking and running tips, transition mastery and mental strategies that will maximize strengths, compensate for weaknesses and focus on the fun and sense of achievement experienced as a participant in the triathlon.

The courses will accommodate all levels of experience. All sessions will be held at the Island House Spa location at the resort.

The 12-week training course starts Aug. 5. The eight-week training course starts Sept. 4.

The courses will include individualized workout plans and a schedule for each day of the selected plan, and one group training session per week.

Cost is $350 for the 12-week course and $250 for the eight-week course. Attendance at the orientation sessions is free, limited to one session per participant, and is open to anyone who is considering participating in the Longboat Key Triathlon.

College Fastpitch Recruiting Combine

SARASOTA Extra Innings of Sarasota will host its second annual fastpitch combine. The event, held at the Miss Sarasota Softball Complex (1133 Gun Club Road) on Aug. 25 beginning at 8 a.m., will showcase female athletes locally and across the state in the eighth grade up to college.

USF, Auburn, North Carolina State, Florida State, Florida Gulf Coast University, Florida Southern, Polk State College, State College of Florida and Indian River Community College all attended last year, while many others have all verbally indicated their intent to attend this year.

The primary purpose is to promote the athletes and expose them to college coaches in hopes of achieving scholarship monies. The athletes will perform various skill sets including speed and agility (SPARQ), along with individual skills related to the game of fastpitch softball

Powell Middle School football camp

SPRING HILL Powell Middle School will hold a Football Agility and Conditioning Camp Aug. 6-9 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the school’s football field.

Cost is $50 per participant; second sibling will be $25. Open to all Hernando County middle school students. Attendance at camp will give a physical advantage at football tryouts.

Campers must have completed FHSAA sports paperwork, provide a birth certificate and a filled out registration form.

Participants need to have transportation to and from camp. Any student picked up more than 20 minutes late will be asked not to return.

Students should drink plenty of water before camp starts each day and be prepared to work hard. Water will be available to students to keep them hydrated.

Golfweek, Senior tours

Two golf tours will be available in 2012 at courses across North Central Florida for those seeking a competitive experience on the links.

The Golfweek Amateur Tour is debuting this season, open to men and women of all ages and skill levels. Each event will feature five flights based on handicap to keep competition fair. Participants can join at any time during the year for a $90 membership fee. The fee includes a subscription to Golfweek magazine and Tour merchandise. Tour members can play in all local events as well as any AGT event nationally. There will be a Tour Championship held Oct. 19-21 at Palmetto Dunes Resort in Hilton Head, S.C.
