Adams named FACA All-Star

TALLAHASSEE Springstead pitcher Alexis Adams, fresh off leading the Lady Eagles to a regional final, has been named an All-Star by the Florida Athletic Coaches Association.

As a result, she’ll be on the roster for the West All-Stars in the FACA’s Softball All-Star Classic held May 18-19 at Ocala-Forest High.

She’ll represent District 10 after being voted its Player of the Year.

The senior right-hander went 22-5 this season, posting a 0.98 earned run average with 227 strikeouts over 186 innings. She also hit .419 with a home run and 26 runs batted in.

One of her coaches at the FACA event will be Hernando High’s Kevin Bittinger, an assistant for the West squad after guiding the Lady Leopards (14-11) to a county title.

Weeki Wachee scrimmage for vets

WEEKI WACHEE Weeki Wachee High School will be hosting its third annual Veterans Spring Football Scrimmage on Friday at 6 p.m.

All proceeds given at the gate will be donated to a disabled veterans’ assistance fund.

NCT girls basketball camp

BROOKSVILLE Coach Emily Gore and Nature Coast Technical High School will be hosting the inaugural Summer Youth Basketball Camp in the Shark gymnasium June 12-14 from 2 to 5:30 p.m.

Registration begins at 1:45 p.m. on June 12. Early registration is preferred and guarantees correct T-shirt size. The cost per camper is $50, which includes a free T-shirt. Pizza and Powerade will be sold each night at 5 p.m. for $1 each.

The camp is open for children age 6 to those entering seventh grade.

Several members of the NCT basketball team and assistant coach Lori Cleary will also be helping with the camp. The goal is to help each player have a fun experience learning basketball fundamentals, game situations and rules while making new friends.

Powell Middle School holding camps

SPRING HILL Powell Middle School will be hosting its Panther Pride Volleyball Camp for girls entering sixth through eighth grades.

The camp will take place June 25-28 from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the school’s gym. The cost is $50 and each participant will receive a T-shirt.

Campers will learn the fundamentals and skills of the game while having fun with their fellow campers. Things to bring each day include: knee pads, drink, sneakers and socks.

Space is limited, so sign up now. Please have all money and forms turned in to Coach Dumas in Room 806 by June 8. Checks should be made payable to PMS.

Powell will also hold a Football Agility and Conditioning Camp Aug. 6-9 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the school’s football field.

Cost is $50 per participant; second sibling will be $25. Open to all Hernando County middle school students. Attendance at camp will give a physical advantage at football tryouts.

Campers must have completed FHSAA sports paperwork, provide a birth certificate and a filled out registration form.

Participants need to have transportation to and from camp. Any student picked up more than 20 minutes late will be asked not to return.

Students should drink plenty of water before camp starts each day and be prepared to work hard. Water will be available to students to keep them hydrated.

Brooksville Tri-5K Challenge

BROOKSVILLE The Red Mule Runners are hosting the inaugural Brooksville Tri-5K Challenge Croom Doom this summer, featuring three races starting at the Tucker Hill Fire Tower off Croom Road. The races will take place June 1, June 22 and July 13, each starting at 6:45 p.m.

Race day registrations will begin at 5 p.m. The entry fee per race is $15 or $35 for all three. T-shirts will be guaranteed to all runners. Proceeds will help support local high school summer running camps. Any team interested in being part of the profit for camp needs to come up with $500 in sponsors per team per gender.

Individual medals per race, per age group, will be awarded. Points will be tallied based upon placement either overall or per age group. After the third race, awards will be given for the individuals who score the most points in all three races combined. Age groups will be determined upon the age of the individual at the first entered race.

HCRD summer sports camps

BROOKSVILLE The Hernando County Recreation Department has several youth sports camps available this summer.

Four different weeks of basketball camps will be run by Marion Jones, Michael Jones and Calvin Brown. Fundamentals of the game, skills and drills will be taught, followed by scrimmage games Monday through Thursday.

The camps will be held at West Hernando Middle School  June 11-14, June 18-21 and July 16-20, and at Challenger K-8, July 9-12.

Cost is $65.00 per week. Camp hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Extended hours of 7:30 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 4 p.m. are available for an extra $10.

Two weeks of volleyball, run by Hernando High head coach Patti Martin and assistant coach Robin Bailey, will teach fundamentals of the game of volleyball, daily drills and skills, followed by daily interleague games.

The camps take place June 25-28 and July 30-Aug. 2 at Challenger.

Cost is $65.00 per week. Camp hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Extended hours of 7:30 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 4 p.m. are available for an extra $10.

In baseball, learn from the pro. A former All-SEC third baseman for the University of Alabama and drafted by the St Louis Cardinals in 1986, Eddie Looper will be teaching the fundamentals of the game of baseball, including hitting, catching, fielding and throwing daily June 18-22 and June 25-29 at Anderson Snow Sports Complex.

Cost is $65.00 per week or $100 for both weeks combined. Hours are 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday.

There will also be a Horsin’ Around Camp featuring daily lessons on riding a horse, grooming and all the things required to take care of a horse, taught by a local 4-H instructor and owner/operator of Blair Performances Horses.

The camp takes place June 18-22. Cost is $175.

SPRING HILL Its All About The Youth Inc. will be hosting a Football Developmental Camp every Saturday from 10 a.m to noon atVeteransMemorial Park.

SPRING HILL The Suncoast Select 16U team is currently looking for additional players to help complete its roster. The team will be participating in Perfect Game Showcase events, which are attended by numerous college and Major League Baseball recruiters, as well as other select events throughout the summer.

Jerome Brown Golf Classic

BROOKSVILLE The Jerome Brown Golf Classic will take place June 2 at World Woods Golf Club. The event is sponsored by Bright House Networks.

Registration begins at 11:30 a.m., with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. following a lunch at noon.

The entry fee is $70 per player, and includes green fees, cart, lunch and a golf cap. Make all checks payable to the Jerome Brown Youth Foundation. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams.

Tennis camp and classes

SPRING HILL Ace Performance Tennis is offering Quick Start Drills Mondays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Delta Woods Park.

The cost is $10.00 per class. Drills and games are designed for beginning players using the USTA-approved strategies for 60-foot court players.

Learn to play tennis quickly with age- and size-appropriate equipment and modified courts.

Additionally, Ace Performance Tennis is offering a Ladies Night Out, Mondays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Delta Woods Park.

The cost is $10 per class. Women of beginning and intermediate skill levels will learn to play in a fun social setting.

Spring Hill Youth wrestling

SPRING HILL Spring Hill Youth Wrestling practices will be held Tuesday and Thursday Nights at Springstead High School in the wrestling room.

Beginners practice will be at 5:30 p.m. while advanced begins at 6:30 p.m.

Golfweek, Senior tours

Two golf tours will be available in 2012 at courses across North Central Florida for those seeking a competitive experience on the links.

The Golfweek Amateur Tour is debuting this season, open to men and women of all ages and skill levels. Each event will feature five flights based on handicap to keep competition fair. Participants can join at any time during the year for a $90 membership fee. The fee includes a subscription to Golfweek magazine and Tour merchandise. Tour members can play in all local events as well as any AGT event nationally. There will be a Tour Championship held Oct. 19-21 at Palmetto Dunes Resort in Hilton Head, S.C.

Also, for the second year in a row, there will be a Senior Amateur Tour. Membership is open to men and women of any skill level, age 50 and over during the calendar year. All events are divided into four flights based on handicap. The Tour Championship will be held Nov. 13-14 in Pinehurst, N.C.
