13-year-old accused of battering deputy

SPRING HILL –
A 13-year-old boy was charged Thursday morning with battery of a law enforcement officer after he was accused of fighting with an arresting deputy.

The boy, whose name is not being published by Hernando Today because of his age, refused to go to the Endeavor Academy in Brooksville after a judicial order was signed the previous day directing him to report to the school, according to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.

Endeavor is a school for at-risk youths.

The teen was hiding underneath his sister’s bed, and his father called law enforcement because he couldn’t coax him out, deputies said.

When the arresting deputy arrived at the boy’s house that morning off Timberlake Avenue, the boy remained under the bed and cursed at both his father and the deputy, according to an arrest affidavit.

The boy tried to kick the deputy, who grabbed the teen by the foot and pulled him from under the bed, authorities said.

The teen continued being physical and, at one point, kicked the deputy in the face, causing his lip to bleed, according to the affidavit.

Both the father and the deputy restrained the teen. He was handcuffed and brought to the Hernando County Jail, authorities said.

The teen was charged with an additional count of resisting arrest with violence.

The Department of Juvenile Justice was contacted, and the boy was released to his parents and placed on home detention.
