Woman seeks OK to open nail salon inside home

BROOKSVILLE – Planning and zoning commissioners Monday will discuss a request from a Spring Hill woman who wants to open a nail salon inside her home.

Louise Holmes, a state-licensed cosmetologist, is finishing nail technician training at Bene’s International School of Beauty in New Port Richey and wants to use her home as a start-up business, which she hopes will grow until she can open her own salon in Spring Hill.

Holmes said in her application for a special exception use permit that she would turn one of the four bedrooms at her 14296 Linden Drive home into a salon area, where she would use a desk and chairs.

She plans to use 255 square feet of the home for the salon, which comes to about 8.4 percent of the total area of the home. County regulations restrict home occupations to no more than 25 percent of the total floor area. Holmes would be the sole employee and would not hire anyone else.

She plans to designate a parking space in her driveway for customers, who would access the salon through a gate.

Holmes said she plans to operate from about 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. depending on appointments and one client will be allowed at a time. No walk-ins, she said.

Planning and zoning staffers are recommending the board approve the permit, with stipulations.

The planning and zoning meeting will begin at 9 a.m. Monday at the Hernando County Government Center, 20 North Main St., in Brooksville.

.Planning members will discuss land development regulations, including a review of the county’s flood ordinance.

.The board will go over two upcoming vacancies on the Planning and Zoning Commission. Positions for two regular members will expire on Dec. 31.
