Veterans Day tributes kicked off Saturday morning with the annual Veterans Appreciation Parade in Brooksville. More events are planned for various days this week in Hernando County. They include:

♦ Westside Elementary, 5400 Applegate Drive, will honor more than 25 veterans and their guests Monday at 9:30 a.m. A light breakfast will be served. For more information, contact Cari O’Rourke at (352) 796-7080.

♦ Salishan Retirement Living, 191 Astaire Lane, will hold a ceremony honoring veterans beginning at 10 a.m. Tuesday, which is Veterans Day. Activity Coordinator Debbie Burton said five veterans will be honored at this year’s celebration.

“Last year was the first time we’d done it,” Burton said. At that time, 20 received recognition with a pinning ceremony. “It was very moving,” Burton said.

There also will be a flag formation performed by the Marine Corps Color Guard.

♦ Pasco-Hernando State College on Wednesday and Thursday will hold an event to recognize local veterans. The Honor Our Patriots Event will salute veterans while also providing students an opportunity to learn about life in the military.

HOPE in the Courtyard will be held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. both days, and representatives from the Navy, Army, Air Force and Marine Corps will be on hand to speak about military life. Resource groups for veterans will have information and displays. There also will be a military-style obstacle course.

Veterans panel discussions are scheduled to take place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Veterans will discuss the realities, challenges and rewards of becoming part of the military.

Student panel discussions are scheduled for Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. Military personnel who also are students will discuss their experiences.

All HOPE activities are free and open to the public. They will take place at the college’s Spring Hill Campus at 450 Beverly Court.
