Man, 30, injured in Brooksville shooting, deputies say
BROOKSVILLE – Neighbors on Maycrest Avenue gathered outside their homes Tuesday afternoon after multiple sheriff’s deputies, detectives and other units descended on the dusty, limerock road.
Around 2:30 p.m., a woman called 911 to report she had been beaten and a man had been shot at 13069 Maycrest Avenue.
Kevin Rooks, 30, was taken to nearby Central High School by ambulance, then airlifted to a trauma center.
Diana Adams, 55, is believed to be the shooter and the person who called 911, said Hernando County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Denise Moloney.
Neighbors said Rooks and Adams are engaged and moved into the home together with Adams’ two adult children, who are handicapped.
Amanda Kinnas, who lives a few houses down from Rooks and Adams, said she was unloading groceries from her car when she heard Adams say “Kevin, I’m calling an ambulance.”
Rooks’ medical condition was not available late Tuesday afternoon.
At some point, Adams began suffering from medical issues as well, Moloney said, and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.
Adams’ children were taken by ambulance to Oak Hill Hospital for medical issues unrelated to the shooting, but possibly as a result of the incident, Moloney said. Two therapy dogs were taken out of the home by Hernando County Animal Services, and taken to Oak Hill.
Property appraiser records show the home is owned by Adams, Rooks, Heather Adams and Robert Adams.
Court and jail records show Rooks was arrested in August on charges of battery, domestic battery by strangulation and crimes against elderly or disabled person without great harm. Prosecutors later dropped the charges.
