Man, 21, faces attempted murder charges after shooting at brother, deputies say
A 21-year-old Brooksville man faces attempted murder charges after firing a shotgun towards his brother during a fight on Saturday night, deputies said.
Jason Lewis also faces charges of aggravated battery (two counts), aggravated assault with a fire arm (five counts) and felon in possession of a firearm (one count).
Lewis and his mother got into an argument at their home at 2230 Endsley Road when his younger brother Dillon Lewis intervened, according to a release from the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office. Jason Lewis told his brother he was leaving but would return to shoot him, deputies said.
Jason Lewis drove away but returned less than five minutes later, got out of his vehicle and was seen loading a shotgun, according to the report. Lewis approached a group of people sitting by a bonfire in the yard, deputies said.
When Dillon Lewis got out of his chair, Jason Lewis pointed the shotgun at his face before lowering it and shooting at the ground, just inches from his brother’s right foot, according to the report.
Deputies believe the round ricocheted off the ground before striking Dillon in the left earlobe and a bystander in the right triceps, causing minor injuries to both, the report said.
Others at the bonfire rushed Jason Lewis to disarm him, deputies said.
Jason and Dillon Lewis began fighting and Dillon received scratches, an injured wrist and a bite on his chest, deputies said.
After a brief fight inside the home, Jason Lewis left, deputies said.
Deputies issued a be-on-the-lookout alert for Lewis and on Sunday obtained a warrant for his arrest. After a detective received the warrant, he pulled into the sheriff’s office parking lot and was waved down by Jason Lewis, who was turning himself in, deputies said.
He did not make a statement about the incident to deputies.
Lewis was taken to the Hernando County Detention Center where he was being held on $100,000 bond.
