Hernando sheriff’s official resigns over used cellphone
A Hernando County sheriff’s official has resigned after giving a department-issued cellphone to a relative, the sheriff’s office said.
Earlier this week, Sheriff Al Nienhuis received information that Chief Administrative Officer Bill Kicklighter had given the phone, which was no longer being used by Kicklighter and had been replaced by a newer model, to a family member.
The cell phone had been purchased with funds from the department’s budget and was not authorized for use outside of the agency, the department said.
After confirming the information, the department said Nienhuis lost confidence in Kicklighter’s ability to carry out his duties, and Kicklighter elected to resign.
The department will complete audits and review policies to avoid future issues, officials said.
