FACA All-State baseball, softball released
The Florida Athletic Coaches Association has released its All-State and All-Academic teams for baseball and softball.
In baseball, Hernando High senior shortstop Christian Arroyo and senior pitcher/outfielder Brandon Lawson, as well as Springstead senior pitcher/first baseman Brandon Brosher are represented on both squads.
Arroyo and Lawson made it in Class 5A, Brosher in 6A.
Arroyo hit .524 this year, tallying 13 doubles, three triples and 11 home runs. He also drove in 35 runs and scored 42 times.
Academically, Arroyo graduated with a 4.4 GPA and was Hernando’s Class of 2013 salutatorian
Last week, he became the county’s first player to be taken in the first round of the Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft, going to the San Francisco Giants with the 25th pick. He’s also signed with the University of Florida.
Lawson, a USF signee, ended up 11-0 with a 0.27 earned run average, striking out 128 batters in 78.2 innings.
Brosher hit .451 with four doubles, two triples, four homers, 29 RBI and scored 27 runs.
As a pitcher, he was 5-3 with a 2.42 ERA, striking out 81 batters across 55 innings.
He was selected in the 36th round of the draft by the New York Mets and is signed with Division I Oral Roberts University.
In softball, Hernando pitcher Courtney Riddle and catcher Megan Lane were 5A All-State picks.
The junior Riddle, the Hernando Today Player of the Year, was 22-7 with a 1.41 ERA and 177 strikeouts over 188.2 innings. She also hit .448 with 13 doubles and 42 RBI.
Lane, a sophomore, posted a .400 average, scored 37 runs and drove in 25. She totaled six doubles, six triples, two homers and stole 44 bases.
Also for the Lady Leopards, junior shortstop Tana McDaniel made the 5A All-Academic team.
