Deputies: Spring Hill man burns own car, reports it stolen
SPRING HILL — A 64-year-old man was arrested this week after his supposedly stolen car was found burned in North Florida woods.
Lorenzo Robles Diaz, of 13063 County Line Road, was arrested Saturday and charged with filing a false report to law enforcement, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said.
According to a sheriff’s report, Diaz claimed that his 2007 Mazda was stolen from the parking lot of Harbor Freight on U.S. 19.
Diaz told a deputy he went into the store for about 25 minutes and his car was gone when he came out, the report said.
Diaz told the deputy that the doors were locked, the windows were rolled up and that he had the keys, but there was no broken glass in the area where he said he parked, the report said.
As Diaz gave information, the deputy learned that Diaz’s car had been found around 2:30 p.m. Saturday in a wooded area in Madison County in North Florida, the report said. Diaz’s car had been burned.
After Diaz was taken into custody, the deputy found a receipt in his pants pocket from a store in Jasper, near the area where his charred car was found, the report said.
Diaz could not offer “an appropriate reason” for having the receipt, the report said. Diaz was released from the Hernando County Jail on Sunday, although jail records do not indicate a bail amount.
