Damsel in Defense offers protection that is fashionable, effective
Damsel in Defense began as a solution for two stay-at-home moms who were concerned about their safety, especially while traveling alone or with small children. Liz Marsh doesn’t feel intimidated, threatened or vulnerable when she is alone, even after dark. She doesn’t invite trouble and takes necessary precautions to avoid becoming a statistic. But if she finds herself alone in a dark parking lot or at home when her husband is out, Marsh doesn’t panic.
Marsh is an independent sales consultant for Damsel in Defense, a company that provides nonlethal products for self defense.
Damsel in Defense is about equipping women with tools to keep them safe and give them confidence that they have a way out if they feel threatened.
Marsh joined the company this year because she believed in its mission, she said.
With a selection of stun guns, pepper sprays with alarms, whistles, child trackers and more, the company equips, empowers and educates women and others to save lives.
Damsel in Defense, explained Marsh, was founded three years ago by two stay-at-home moms, Mindy Lin and Bethany Hughs, who recognized the need for personal protection for women. Within a year, the company grew to more than 1,000 independent Damsel contractors across the country. There are currently 7,000 working the direct sales approach.
Marsh hosts group events and private parties, called empower hours, where guests can try out the products, asks questions, place orders and inquire about joining the team.
The style, functionality and appeal of the products is focused on women. Stun guns come in a variety of colors, with LED flashlights for added protection and disable pins for safety.
“When the pin is removed, the stun gun is useless,” Marsh said. The safety feature also helps prevent an attacker from using the tool on the victim.
Pepper sprays are available in a range of styles, colors and designs. The company also has key chain alarms, door alarms, child trackers and emergency car kits.
Damsel in Defense also has “Hermergency” products for women on the go, including signage, car repair kits, personal hygiene items, even a road trip kit with a glass breaker, seat-belt cutter and flashlight and alarm.
Many of the items are easy to conceal in a purse, pocket, or the palm of the hand for quick emergency access. There are even items for young girls because stun guns are illegal for those under 18.
Since joining the Damsel in Defense mission, Marsh has collected an arsenal of stun guns, pepper sprays and other easy-to-access items to help her feel safe and protected. And she is eager to show how the items are fashionable and effective.
Defense items don’t have to be gaudy or intimidating in appearance to work, she said.
Colorful stun guns and wands come in bright colors with visually appealing accessories that allow them to blend well in a purse, briefcase or hanging on a hook near the front door. They also have accessories to allow immediate access to the product in an emergency.
“No one wants to be a victim of crime,” Marsh said. But if the unthinkable happens, she wants to be prepared to fight off an attacker or deter an attack.
