County hires new mosquito control director
BROOKSVILLE — Sandra Fisher is Hernando County’s new mosquito control director.
Her first day tentatively is set for Monday and she will make $59,600. She has a master’s degree in public health and a bachelor’s degree in biology. She also has 10 years experience in the mosquito control profession with varied scientific, managerial and administrative skills in the field and laboratory.
Most recently, Fisher served as the Miami-Dade mosquito control chief and managed surveillance, aerial, ground and maintenance programs within the division that covers all aspects of mosquito control.
Her administrative responsibilities included performance measures and objectives, management of business plan, personnel, budget and state grant oversight.
Fisher replaces former mosquito control director Peter Taylor, who was fired in March after his supervisor determined he failed to perform his duties.
“I am truly excited to join the team at Hernando County Mosquito Control and I am appreciative of the county’s administration having confidence in my abilities to take on the role as the new director,” Fisher stated in a news release. “I hope that my experience in this field brings a positive contribution to the program that provides disease prevention and nuisance control for residents and visitors to Hernando County.”
Fisher’s past positions include: safety and sanitation specialist/program analyst with Miami-Dade County Health Department; biologist with the City of Hampton, Va.; environmental health assistant ll, City of Norfolk, Va., Vector Control; and fellow for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“Fisher has the ability we were looking for and we are grateful she will be sharing her expertise with us as we eagerly anticipate the positive impact she will have for the county,” Environmental Services Director Susan Goebel-Canning stated.
