Brooksville Police captain arrested on battery charges

BROOKSVILLE – A captain with the Brooksville Police Department has been arrested on misdemeanor battery charges, according to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.

Capt. Rick Hankins turned himself in at the Sumter County Detention Center last Friday and was released on $500 bail.

On Dec. 22, sheriff’s deputies responded to a battery complaint at a house party in Spring Hill. The alleged victim, Fred Taclik, said Hankins battered him and the altercation was unprovoked.

A sheriff’s office investigation validated Taclik’s accusations and an arrest warrant was issued for Hankins on Dec. 23.

That day, Police Chief George Turner informed Sheriff Al Nienhuis more evidence and testimony might be available, and the warrant was delayed as the witnesses were re-interviewed.

The investigation was completed on Jan. 3, according to the sheriff’s office, and the warrant was served.

The State Attorney’s Office is reviewing the investigation, according to the sheriff’s office.

Denise Moloney, public information officer for the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, said the case was still open and no further details were available.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office said Hankins’ arrest affidavit was exempt from public release.

Records show Hankins was hired by the Brooksville Police Department in April 1997. He makes $64,209.60 annually.
