Brooksville hosts professional disc golf tournament
BROOKSVILLE – Professional disc golfers from across the country gathered in Brooksville over the weekend to compete in “Throw Down the Mountain.”
This is the second year the event was held on a 60-acre property on Cooper Terrace in Brooksville following a hiatus since 2006.
Event organizer Michael Barnett said 176 pros competed on the 18-hole course.
A former limestone quarry, the course features one of the 10 highest elevation points in the state.
Up to 600 spectators were expected to watch the competition, Barnett said, including Sunday’s final round.
“All the big guns will be out,” Barnett said, adding the prize purse for the winner was more than $12,000.
Some 184 amateurs played during the first weekend of the competition on Jan. 11 and 12.
Barnett said three players qualified for the Maple Hill Open, a championship event in Massachusetts.
Barnett said there are talks of creating a fall disc golf competition at the site.
