Traffic Tip Tuesday 03-09-2016
We all know that we are obligated to stop at posted stop signs. It’s the law. But, often times when we approach a stop sign, another vehicle arrives simultaneously to stop at their own stop sign. A question commonly asked is, “Who goes first?” If the intersecting roadway is clear of traffic then follow Florida State Statute 316.123(2)(b) which states:
At a four-way stop intersection, the driver of the first vehicle to stop at the intersection shall be the first to proceed. If two or more vehicles reach the four-way stop intersection at the same time, the driver of the vehicle on the left shall yield the right-of-way to the vehicle on the right.
This rule can also be applied to four way stop intersections as well.
Although there should be no confusion to drivers as to the function of a stop sign, utilizing this legally mandated procedure should eliminate any confusion related to intersections with posted stop signs.
