Sloan brings laughs
Stand-up comedian Sloan will make your sides split with his slanted take on the world.

DAV summer fun
The Disabled American Veterans Summer Festival is set for 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the DAV, 16299 Nancy Ave., Brooksville. There will be family fun for everyone, and the SPCA will be there with information about pet adoption. Admission is free; all proceeds go directly to the DAV. Jeremy Ewbank show
Rock ‘n’ roll and country music tribute artist Jeremy Ewbank brings his “Little Bit Country, Little Bit Rock ‘n’ Roll” variety show to the Country Kitchen, 20133 Cortez Blvd. in Brooksville, at 4 p.m. Sunday. Ewbanks portrays legends of country and rock, including Buddy Holly and Elvis.

Hernando High cheerleader car wash
The Hernando High School cheerleaders will hold a fundraising car wash from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Radio Shack (in front of the Winn-Dixie), 1220 S. Broad St., Brooksville. There will be a shady spot to sit and relax with complimentary ice water and lemonade for customers. Hernando High School mascot Leo will be on hand for pictures. Alumni are welcome to come cheer on the girls and give them a helping hand.
Christmas in July Sale at bookstore
Friends of the Library of Hernando County are holding a Christmas in July Sale through the end of the month at the Little Red Schoolhouse Bookstore, 1208 Kenlake Ave., Spring Hill. All proceeds will help fund the Hernando County Public Library System’s summer reading programs.
Items for sale include used books, DVDs and CDs. Prices range from 25 cents to $3.

Basic acting class offered in Brooksville
Live Oak Theatre Company will offer a class in Basic Acting and an Introduction to Live Oak Theatre from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday and again on Aug. 5 and Aug. 7 at Faith Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 200 Mt. Fair Ave., Brooksville. There is no tuition; however, a $10 registration donation is requested. Topics include basic acting skills and principles of acting; theatre terminology and etiquette; and audition techniques. Children ages 7 to 14 are eligible. Those who successfully complete the program can audition for Live Oak Theatre’s productions of “Anne of Avonlea” and “The Music Man.” Auditions for both shows take place Aug. 12 at 7:30 p.m. and Aug. 14 at 6:30 p.m.

Rain Barrel Workshop set for Wednesday
The Florida-Friendly Landscaping program of Hernando County presents a Rain Barrel Workshop from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Hernando County Extension office, 1653 Blaise Drive, Brooksville. The cost is $65, which includes one 65-gallon rain barrel per household. Hernando County Utilities customers will receive a $25 credit on their water bill. Class size is limited and attendees must pre-pay to ensure availability of a rain barrel.

Coalition plans Preschool Palooza
Early Learning Coalition of Pasco and Hernando Counties Inc. presents its second annual Preschool Palooza from 3 to 5 p.m. on Aug. 2 at the Jerome Brown Community Center, 99 Jerome Brown Place, Brooksville. The free event features sing-a-long songs brought to life by the masterful storyteller and guitarist “Mr. Tommy,” whose unique interactive program gets children off their feet and encourages them to build their self-esteem and imagination.
