ALL-COUNTY WRESTLING
Sixty-nine percent, or 11-of-16 all-stars, represented F.W. Springstead in this year’s Hernando Today All-Hernando County Wrestling Team.

As county coaches and the Hernando Today staff named 11 Eagles to the annual squad, Nature Coast Technical and Hernando High each had two selections while Central High rounded out the team with one selection.

The season was highlighted at the 47th annual FHSAA Finals at The Lakeland Center where F.W. Springstead grapplers walked away with five gold medals.

Besides toting home five gold medals for a second consecutive season, the Spring Hill squad became the first Hernando County mat program to capture a state championship (2A).

For their outstanding efforts, Springstead’s five gold medalists, Richie Bliss, Virgil Toms, Nick Soto, Cody Ross and Shawn Landgraff, were all named as the 2010-11 All-Hernando County Wrestlers of the Year.

Swensen leads the way

Springstead’s seventh-year Head Coach Eric Swensen was a slam dunk pick as Hernando County’s Coach of the Year.

For a second straight season, SHS finished 13-0 in dual meets. Across seven campaigns, Swensen is 94-12 lifetime (89 percent).

Swensen and assistant coach Sal Basile watched the team tote home a county-record eight tournament titles at seven different locales. The season featured repeat tourney crowns at the Deltona Duals, Brooksville-Kiwanis Invitational, Gulf Duals, Springstead Inv. and Flagler Inv.

Remarkably, Swensen’s troops earned their seventh district title in seven years, along with the school’s first regional crown in a decade and the school’s first-ever state title.

Swensen’s grapplers captured a staggering 502-of-622 individual bouts to win 81 percent of their matches. Amazingly, half of the Eagles’ bouts ended in pins (311).

No wonder area coaches unanimously selected Swensen as COY for a sixth straight year.

“The main thing was he got his kids there,” stressed NCT seventh-year skipper Mike Lastra. “And it certainly wasn’t a cakewalk. They had to answer the bell everywhere they went. With any missteps at regions or states, they could have lost, but they answered the bell.”

What’s the most impressive thing about the 2010-11 Eagles?

“They come in focused and ready to wrestle,” declared Lastra. “And we all know what’s coming. Their focus is on cradles and pins. If you make a mistake, that’s what’s coming. As a coach, you want all your kids to compete with that killer instinct.”

“Eric (Swensen) did a phenomenal job of keeping his kids on task and staying healthy,” noted Central Head Coach Rich Drumheller. “It’s a tough job keeping teenagers in line, but he kept his team focused.”

“His team walked away with five gold medals. Five,” emphasized Hernando High’s Hall of Fame Coach Bill Combs Sr. “And his team won the state championship; that’s the goal in our sport.”

“Coach of the Year is great,” described Coach Swensen. “I’d like to think I steer the ship. But I have a lot of support. (Assistant coach) Sal (Basile) is amazing. He brings a great deal of intensity to the practices and matches. (James) Tietema worked exclusively with our heavier kids and that helped a ton.

“And we have a lot of fans who travel everywhere we go. We have parents that allow kids to stay in their homes after a long tournament. That all adds up,” added Coach Swensen. “But most importantly are the guys on the team; they did all the hard work. They’re the ones that peaked at just the right time.”

“I wouldn’t be coach without everyone else’s help,” pointed out Swensen. “And I have an extremely understanding wife (Deb) and so does Sal (with Christine Basile). We’re both very fortunate.”

Eagles rule

Besides Swensen, Springstead’s 10 all-star grapplers include: Bliss, Toms, Soto, Ross, Landgraff, Jordan Rivera, Sean Redman, Sammy Colon, Thomas Gupton and John Dreggors.

Rivera, Colon and Gupton were first-time selections, Dreggors and Toms were two-time All-County picks, while Bliss, Redman, Soto, Ross and Landgraff were all three-time selections.

Three-time champ Bliss

Bliss simply rewrote the record books.

Bliss became the first Springstead grappler to earn back-to-back-to-back state crowns. (Hernando High’s Addison Chipoletti initially turned the trick from 2002-05). Bliss, a four-year varsity letterman and three-year starter, captured nearly 94 percent of his career matches (146-of-156).

In the process, Bliss became the first North Suncoast grappler to not only win 100-plus matches (146), but also collect 100-plus pins (101).

Bliss, who finished the 2009-10 campaign on a 38-match winning skein, extended the streak to a career-best 63 wins in a row before getting stuck by Tampa Bay Christian eighth-grader Dylan Lucas in the Oviedo Tourney finals.

Though Lucas captured the Class 1A state finals at 103 pounds, Bliss defeated him twice including the rubber match at the Flagler Inv. Bliss (45-1 overall, 32 pins) completed his senior year on a 20-match win skein.

“Once he broke into the starting lineup, any time Richie lost it was an upset,” explained Coach Swensen. “What I liked most was he set the bar high for all the other guys. He’s our first three-time state champion. And he had over 100 pins. Most guys don’t ever get 100 wins; he did both.

“Guys like Cody Ross are gunning to break the records that Richie set,” added Coach Swensen. “Richie was a horse that took care of business. He’ll go down as one of this county’s greatest wrestlers.”

Rivera: Huge splash

As a freshman, Rivera made a tremendous impact. In his initial varsity campaign Rivera finished 44-9 at 112 pounds. He captured a district crown, finished as region runner-up and placed third at states at 112.

“Jordan is the last of the Booker-Soto family grapplers,” declared Coach Swensen. “So he comes in with an extreme wrestling background. Jordan’s got a little swagger to him. Even though he was a freshman he acted like a senior captain.

“He might of snuck up on some guys this last year; that won’t happen next year,” predicted Swensen. “Instead of the hunter, he’ll be the hunted.”

Redman: Breaks through

“Buddha” Redman, a junior, enjoyed a breakout campaign.

Redman finished 31-8 with 23 pins at 125 pounds but captured his first-ever district title and reached states for the first time. Though he went 1-2 at Lakeland, the victory in the Jenkins Arena was his 100th. He’s 100-42 lifetime with 64 pins.

“Sean has always been in our room,” reminded Coach Swensen.” He’s definitely a mat rat and he works hard. This year he had some ups and downs, but from the state series on he started to put it all together. If we can get rid of the stress, he should be able to place at states next year.”

Toms: Injury-free campaign leads to second gold

As a junior at SHS, Toms went 34-6 and captured a gold medal at states but was bothered by several nagging injuries.

This year, Toms was injury-free leading to a 46-3 campaign that culminated in his second gold-medal performance at 130 pounds in Lakeland.

“Virgil was affected by some personal stuff as a junior,” recalled Coach Swensen. “He was new to our school and new to our program. He had a lot of things on his mind.

“This year, he really became more comfortable and became friends with everyone on the team,” added Swensen. “He’s such a consistent wrestler. He’s very smart and has such natural instincts on the mat; that’s what makes him such a tremendous champion.”

Soto: Leads by example

As a junior, Soto finished 45-0 and captured his first state title.

He extended the winning skein to 54 matches in a row before losing to Brandon’s talented Tyler Liberatore in overtime at the Cougar Inv. finals at 135 pounds, 3-1.

Despite the setback, Soto reeled off 32 straight wins before losing to Liberatore in the Tony Ippolito finals, 4-3.

After that, Soto strung together 10 wins in a row for second straight gold medal. He finished with a county-best 50-2 slate this winter and 140-12 lifetime.

Many saw Soto as the face of Springstead wrestling.

“No doubt that Nick was our leader inside and outside the room,” described Coach Swensen. “He was a dominant, dominant wrestler. What I liked most was Coach Sal (Basile) would have Nick do a move during a drill and he’d use it over and over again. He was like a textbook.

“Some guys like wrestling and are very good,” added Swensen. “Nick genuinely loves every aspect of wrestling and that’s why he’s going D-I next year. He’ll be extremely difficult to replace.”

Ross: Stays on a roll

As a freshman, Ross finished 43-9 and finished as a state runner-up at 119.

As a sophomore, Ross posted a county-best 50-1 slate at 135 pounds and captured his first gold medal by defeating Dwyer’s James Jenkins, 5-1. He concluded that second season on a 16-match winning skein.

The three-year Eagle starter extended the streak to 42 wins in a row before Camden County, Ga.’s Austin Trott edged him in the Oviedo finals at 140, 4-3.

From that point on, Ross never lost again capturing his final 23 matches at 140 for his second straight gold medal.

Ross enters his senior campaign at 142-11 lifetime with 69 pins. He has an outside chance of becoming the county’s first-ever 200-match winner and may eclipse Bliss for most lifetime pins.

“Cody isn’t the vocal leader Nick (Soto) is,” explained Coach Swensen. “He’ll ask questions but he’s not gonna stop practice and say ‘Come on guys, let’s pick it up.’ The thing I admire most is Cody Ross is a competitor. He always finds a way to get the job done.”

Colon: Tough break

Like the majority of grapplers on the Springstead varsity roster, Colon was a three-year starter. Colon posted a career-best 34-12 won-lost slate and earned his second district title.

Of the few injuries the Eagles suffered, Colon broke a bone in his hand during the Flagler Inv. As a result, he did not compete at Brandon Ippolito Tourney before heading into the state series.

He made it to the final round wrestlebacks in regionals before being eliminated by Celebration junior J.J. Francis, 7-3. Francis’ 5-point move during the final 20 seconds sealed Colon’s fate.

Despite competing with one arm, Colon finished his SHS career at 89-42.

“Sammy put together a great year,” remarked Coach Swensen. “Even with one arm, he made it to the final round of regionals. After he broke his hand, he couldn’t grip and was in constant pain. He basically couldn’t practice, but he gave all he could and came up just a little short.”

Landgraff: A dominant season

With the exception of losses to Brandon’s Wally Figaro (16-6) and Clark Glass (pin in 2:49) – Landgraff was perfect on the season.

The four-year Eagle starter enjoyed his best-ever season at 49-2. In between, Landgraff captured his third district title, his second regional crown and in his third trip to states – his initial gold medal.

Behind a machine-gun like effort, Landgraff etched 38 pins to close out his SHS career at 153-35, featuring 95 pins.

“Shawn was definitely explosive. Before this year, he was a boy. This year, he was a man,” explained Swensen. “Because he thought he’d win, he dominated. For whatever reason he didn’t give himself a chance against either Brandon guy he faced. Other than that, he just wrecked everyone else.

“He wrestled so well at states, that if there would have been a Outstanding Wrestler Award, he might have won it for us,” added Swensen.

Gupton: OT Man

Gupton, known for his penchant for wrestling past six minutes, tied a Springstead school record with 57 matches (Thomas Ellerbee in 2009-10).

Gupton posted a 43-14 won-lost mark utilizing his two greatest assets – his tremendous strength and stamina at 160 pounds.

For his efforts, “Gump” – as his tattoo on his arm reads – captured his first district title, finished fourth in regionals to reach states and went 1-2 in Lakeland.

“Gump got a taste of success this year,” said Swensen. “He feels very comfortable winning in OT. He had a checklist of goals and accomplished a lot. Plus, it turned out 160 was a man’s weight class. I think he’ll be a much better all-around wrestler next year.”

Dreggors: One win shy of glory

Dreggors, a junior, stubbed his toe twice this past season.

At the Oviedo finals, Dreggors lost after four overtimes via criteria to 2010 state champion Doug Vollaro of Oviedo, 3-2.

When Vollaro failed to attend regionals (due to sanctions against Oviedo), area pundits anointed Dreggors the state’s heavyweight champ at 2A.

Dreggors reeled off 21 consecutive wins to reach the state finals. But it took 83 seconds for North Marion senior Matt Pringle to end Dreggors’ dream season. Dreggors settled on the silver medal and a career-best 46-2 slate featuring a county-best 39 pins.

“John is one of the best heavyweights in the country,” noted Coach Swensen. “Since the loss at states, he hasn’t lost again. The only thing standing in John’s way of a state championship is John wanting to wrestle his way. Most people would give up their right arm for a silver medal at states but that’s not good enough for John. If he keeps his cool and adjusts ever so slightly, he should be a state champ next year.”

NCT: Two all-stars

NCT set a new school record behind a 26-18 campaign. Seasonal highlights included capturing the Anclote Duals team crown, a runner-up finish in 1A-8 behind Gulf, a seventh-place finish in regionals at Tenoroc and placing 30th, out of 80 schools, at states.

NCT is represented on All-County by junior Carter Bolesta at 135 and junior Peter Holloman at 189.

Bolesta set a Hernando County record by competing in 66 matches, finishing 48-18 overall.

In the process, Bolesta captured the school’s fourth individual district title at Hernando.

At regionals, he placed third to qualify for states. At the Jenkins Arena, Bolesta finished fourth.

“The kid loves the sport,” said Coach Lastra. “He’s a hard worker and even if he’s on vacation, he finds somewhere to work out. This year, he really came on during the state series; that’s where true champions thrive.

“He’s not a real verbal guy,” added Lastra. “He leads by example. He doesn’t joke around much. When he’s on the mats, he goes nonstop.”

For his efforts, Holloman posted a career-best 42-18 slate. He finished as a district runner-up and went 2-2 in regionals.

As an expected three-year varsity grappler, Holloman is expected to set the pace next year for the Sharks.

“We call him the silent assassin,” shrugged Lastra. “Maybe his weight class wasn’t the greatest this year, but if he turns it on next year, he can definitely make some noise.”

Leopards: Two all-stars

Hernando High finished 17-11 overall and finished fourth in districts, 12th in regionals and 26th at states.

The Leopards were paced by Zach Pritz at 171, Jared Young at 140 and freshman Jesse Gaudin at 215. Both juniors, Pritz and Young, reached states.

Young did not make the All-County squad despite a fine 42-11 won-lost slate. Young went 0-2 in his first trip to Lakeland.

Meanwhile, Pritz became a three-time All-County selection after reaching states for a third straight year.

After posting 37-10 and 38-8 campaigns, Pritz blossomed to a team-best 48-6 slate. Four of his losses came from two-time state champion Ladarious Jackson of Gulf High School.

Pritz placed for the first time at states, losing to Jackson in the finals, 8-3.

The athletically gifted Pritz, at 123-24 lifetime with 76 pins, is poised to break some Leopard records next winter.

“Zach wrestled well. On his first loss, he wrestled on a Saturday morning after the first-round playoff football game the night before,” recalled Coach Combs. “It’s not his fault he had a defending state champion in his district. He competed well against Ladarious except for the match at states.

“We have a lot of guys back next year; I expect Zach to have another solid year,” added Coach Combs.

In a down year at 215, Gaudin enjoyed the county’s best record at 21-10 with 12 pins.

“Jesse started a little rocky this year,” noted Coach Combs. “But he works very hard. His brother wrestled for me years ago; so he knows the sport. He comes out to every USA practice we have; that’s what it takes to be a champion.”

Lone Bear: Monsegur

From the beginning of the season to the end, Central High’s most consistent grappler was senior Robbie Monsegur.

Monsegur finished with the team’s finest record at 28-5, featuring a team-best 20 pins.

After capturing a first-place blue ribbon during the 2A-7 Meet at Springstead at 119 pounds, Monsegur’s season was highlighted in regionals with his pulsating 2-1 wrestleback win over Oviedo sophomore Jason Argall in triple overtime, 2-1. The clutch win clinched a trip to the FHSAA Finals in Lakeland.

Monsegur won his first match at states, but dropped his last two to finish 1-2.

“You’ve got to give Robbie a lot of credit,” said Drumheller. “He went from one coach to another for his senior year and a completely different approach, but he still reached states. The way he fought through distractions tells a lot about his character.

“Robbie was the person our guys really looked up to,” pointed out Drumhell;er. “He kept our other supposed leaders on track. We’re gonna miss him a lot. Nearly every time he went out there he won. It’ll be tough filling those shoes. We’ve got to find someone to carry the torch.”
