Sheriff Warns of Utility Trailer Thefts

Recently, Hernando County deputies have observed a significant increase in the theft of utility trailers throughout Hernando County.

Sheriff Al Nienhuis is asking citizens to do their part to keep their property secure.

If you own or are responsible for a utility trailer, please make it difficult for a thief to steal it by following these easy steps:

• Paint your trailer a color that would be very easy to spot by law enforcement (if it were stolen)
• Install locks, alarms, and or tracking devices
• Install a hitch lock (making it impossible for the thief to attach a vehicle to the trailer), tongue lock, coupler lock, or trailer-wheel lock
• Document the trailer
o Take photos and keep them in a safe place
o Place special markings on the trailer in a hidden place
• Park safely and secure or disable the trailer, making it difficult to remove from the property.

As always, if you see anyone or anything suspicious, notify law enforcement immediately. The non-emergency to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office is 352-754-6830. In emergencies, call 9-1-1.
