In sports, an old adage continues to hold water: ‘You’re only as bad as your last game’ applies to winning as well.

Case in point – the defending Class 2A state champions from F.W. Springstead aren’t in a festive mood.

After opening the season two weeks ago capturing 97 percent of their matches at the Deltona Duals (57-of-59), it was quite a different story in Hillsborough County last weekend.

The Eagles came down to Earth following what they called a so-so performance at the Tampa Convention Center during the 16th Plant City-Durant Cougar Invitational.

That field was loaded with some of the best overall talent in Florida and Georgia.

SHS went 30-20 overall and finished sixth in the rugged 30-team field.

Though the Eagles could take solace that they scored more points than any Class 2A Florida team in that building – it did not make up for the lack of any gold medals.

This weekend, Springstead and 19 other teams comprise the North Suncoast’s longest running mat tournament – the two-day 30th annual Brooksville-Kiwanis Invitational at Hernando High’s Michael A. Imhoff Gymnasium.

The two-day tournament begins at 3 p.m. Friday and runs until 10 p.m.

Saturday’s action is set to start with semifinals at 10 a.m. unless any of Friday night’s late second-round wrestlebacks do not get completed across the four mats.

Wrestlebacks will follow the semifinals. Consolation finals are set for 4:30 p.m. followed immediately by the finals.

The 20-team field is expected to include: Ocala-West Port, Tampa-Robinson, Tampa-Jefferson, Tampa-Freedom, Tampa Bay Christian Academy, Brooksville-Central, Brooksville-Nature Coast Technical, Spring Hill-Springstead, Weeki Wachee, New Port Richey-Gulf, Wesley Chapel, Crystal River, Lecanto, Belleview, Citra-North Marion, Ocala-Trinity Catholic, Valrico-Bloomingdale, Gainesville-Buchholz, Dade City-Pasco and host Brooksville-Hernando.

Springstead, who scored a meet-record 317.5 points in 2009, has won this event 15 times, including the past five in a row under Head Coach Eric Swensen.

Meanwhile, the 2010 Class 1A state champion Gulf Buccaneers finished second despite scoring 229 points last winter.

Dreggors out, Herrera in for the Eagles

The Springstead lineup is expected to feature 13 grapplers including a couple of wrinkles.

Look for talented freshman Josh Herrera to make his varsity debut at 132. A nagging rib injury kept him out of the first two Eagle tournaments.

Also, SHS will not have a competitor at 182 pounds, and defending state runner-up and 2010 Kiwanis champion John Dreggors at 285 will not be competing this weekend.

With Dreggors out, look for Corey Humphrey to bump to 285. Humphrey, who did not compete last weekend, went 5-0 at 220 at the Deltona Duals.

The Eagles feature five returning starters from last winter including: seniors Cody Ross at 152, Thomas Gupton at 195 and Sean Redman at 145, junior Stephen Pavao at 120 and sophomore Jordan Rivera at 126.

Pavao was ill and was a last-minute scratch last weekend in Tampa. He comes in unbeaten at 5-0. Pavao is the only returning Eagle that did not place in this event last winter. He finished 2-2.

Ross, who has captured nearly 93 percent (150-of-162) of his career matches, is 12-0 lifetime at Kiwanis with three gold medals in three visits, featuring eight pins.

Redman, who enters the meet 110-44 overall, is 12-3 lifetime at Kiwanis and is seeking his third straight medal and second gold medallion.

Rivera, a 2011 state placer (third) is also a defending Kiwanis champ and enters the meet 8-2 this winter.

Gupton, who finished runner-up at Kiwanis last winter, is seeking his first-ever medallion in an individually bracketed, double-elimination event.

According to Coach Swensen, assistant coach Sal Basile made sure the Eagles turned up the heat in practice leading up to Kiwanis.

“If we were Marines before, we’re Special Forces now,” laughed Swensen on how Coach Basile has raised the intensity by toughening up practice. “We’re not gonna defend a state titles if we continue to wrestle how we did at Durant. We have to bust through some mental blocks.

“We’re certainly not taking this (Kiwanis) for granted,” explained Swensen on his team’s approach. “We’ll probably have half of our guys get either 1-2 seeds. But just because you get a good seed doesn’t mean we can stop working hard. It’s all about restoring our intensity.”

As far as who’ll be in the running for the Kiwanis crown, Swensen said, “Nature Coast probably has their best-ever team. They should be a top three team at Hernando, and Gulf is always tough. Tampa Bay Christian only has a few guys, but those guys can all score big points. The more upsets any teams suffers, the harder it’ll be to finish in the top five.”

The key according to Coach Swensen is Saturday’s semifinals.

“That’s always been the money round for us,” admitted Swensen, the defending Hernando County Coach of the Year. “It’s what separates the men from the boys. It’s all about pushing guys into the finals.

“We know what Cody (Ross), Gump and Buddha (Sean Redman) and Jordan (Rivera) will do,” noted Swensen. “We want to see what the other guys are capable of doing. Can Conor (Ross), Mikey (McDonald), Josh (Herrera) and Jake (Smith), for instance, do what they’re supposed to do? We don’t want excuses. Other teams make excuses; we don’t want to make excuses.”

NCT: 0-for-6 years

One of the most significant stats coming into Kiwanis has been the inability of Nature Coast Technical grapplers to perform at the highest level at Hernando.

NCT comes in fresh off its Ocala-Forest Invitational title two weeks ago. The Sharks are expected to bring a 14-member squad to Hernando.

The biggest problem is the Sharks have never done better than 2009’s fourth-place finish. Of the 70 NCT grapplers who have competed at Kiwanis, none have ever walked away with a gold medal draped around their neck. That’s 0-for-70.

Over the last six seasons, the only Shark to ever reach a Kiwanis final was Carter Bolesta last winter.

Bolesta is 5-3 lifetime at Kiwanis. Bolesta, a 2011 Class 1A state placer, enters Kiwanis at 8-0 with a team-best seven pins at 145 pounds.

Bolesta is one of eight Sharks with previous Kiwanis experience. Other Kiwanis Tourney veterans include Sean Nguyen at 113, Cameron Tull at 132, Brendan Vovan at 152, Mitch Lambert at 160, Carlos Carasquillo at 170, Peter Holloman at 195 and Greg Jarque at 285.

Nguyen placed third at Kiwanis at 106 last winter, though none of the others have.

According to eighth-year NCT Head Coach Mike Lastra it’s time for mind over matter.

“I think the top teams at Kiwanis will be Springstead, Gulf, Robinson and us,” said Lastra. “Of those, Springstead and Gulf have won states titles the past two years, so I’d place them ahead of us.

“Our goal is to do something we’ve never done before,” frankly stated Lastra. “We we’re fourth in 2009 and then we had three guys miss this meet due to ACT Testing. I’d like to see us get our first champion.”

Lastra believes the Sharks are arriving with momentum.

“We’re healthy and we’re coming off a win at Ocala-Forest,” noted Lastra. “We want to do the best we’ve ever done at Hernando. I don’t want to settle on just getting one guy to the finals, either.”

The keys for the Sharks’ success are directly correlated to the tourney semifinals.

“The semifinals are always the difference,” Lastra said. “We need to push guys through. To me, this is a different team than we’ve had in the past. They’ve been here. We’d like to push at least five guys into the finals. Pushing guys into the finals is why Gulf and Springstead have been so successful in the past. If we do that, we could make top three.”

Eight Leopards back

After going 22-26 overall with a young squad last winter, the host Leopards are looking to improve on their ninth-place finish in 2010.

The team’s optimism is based on eight returning Leopards including: Sean Thornton, Ricky Swain, Brennan Ertl, Jared Young, Nick Brewer, Zack Sullivan, Jesse Gaudin and Austin Neff.

HHS will be minus three-time Kiwanis medalist Zach Pritz, who suffered an ACL injury in football. Pritz would have been the only returning Leopard champion from 2010’s event.

Interestingly, the team’s returning state qualifier of last season, Young, has never medaled in his own backyard posting a collective 7-6 slate with five pins.

None of the other returning Leopard grapplers has ever medaled at Kiwanis.

It’s been eight years since Hernando won this event for the first and last time in 2003.

“We’re hoping for a Top 10 finish,” declared HHS Assistant Coach Bill Combs Sr. “The key for us is can our younger kids score some points?”

The injury to Pritz is something the Leopards are struggling with.

“You know it hurts not having him in the lineup,” explained Combs. “That’s a champion out of the picture; that’s a lot of points. You can’t say someone else like Sully (Zack Sullivan) couldn’t step in there and do the job. But with Pritz in there, it was s like automatic that he’d reach the finals.”

Coming in, Young leads the Leopards with a 10-0 slate followed by Swain’s 8-2 slate.

Gaudin is coming off his first tournament action. He went 5-0 with a team-high five pins at the Sebastian River Duals.

Central: Horses at home

Central, which placed a surprising fourth last year at Kiwanis, is continuing to mend.

With a host of fresh faces, CHS finished 1-2 in this past weekend’s abbreviated Solomon Duals Tournament.

Going into Kiwanis, three starters, Puerto Rico and Jesus Nieves and Josh Cleveland, will not be competing.

CHS is expected to bring a nine-man lineup.

Three Bears return from last year’s Kiwanis including: Luke Walton, Anthony DeFranco and Taylor Cromwell. Of that trio only Walton placed in 2010, finishing fourth.

“Right now, he needs some practice time before we put him back on the mats. We’re still a MASH unit,” described second-year Bears’ skipper Rich Drumheller. “Kiwanis is a great tourney. I wrestled in it when I was a young man. We’re not gonna try and sacrifice a kid just to get him in this tournament. In the long run it’s better for us to get these guys healthy before running them out there again.”

“Josh Cleveland was medically cleared to wrestle,” added Coach Dtumheller. “But he hasn’t practiced.”

Walton is looked at as the Bears’ best chance to medal but his weight class – 152 – is loaded with state champion Cody Ross of Springstead and state qualifier Jared Young from Hernando.

CHS hasn’t had a gold medalist at Kiwanis since Dec. 11, 2003 when Bucky Solomon (112) and Sergio Matos (145) turned the trick.

Hornets in the house

Weeki Wachee, which went 2-1 at the Solomon Duals last weekend, enters its first-ever IBT.

Sophomore Brandon Dunn and junior Brandon Tardi each went 2-0 for the Hornets last weekend.
