WRESTLING 312029979

Springstead’s two-hour plus trek to Volusia County last week has nothing on the Hernando High’s road trip this weekend.

The Leopards will travel nearly 3½ hours to Indian River County for Saturday’s 11th annual Shark Invitational Wrestling Tournament at Sebastian River High School.

The tourney is expected to begin at 10 a.m. and is expected to finish by 8 p.m. SRHS is offering an all-day $8 ticket.

The 12-team field featuring a dual-meet format includes: Pool “A” – Brooksville-Hernando, Stuart-Martin County, Oviedo-Hagerty and Vero Beach; Pool “B” – Rockledge, Okeechobee, Titusville and Sebastian River; Pool “C” – Palm Bay-Heritage, Melbourne, Stuart-South Fork and Port St. Lucie.

After pool play, the teams will be cross-bracketed to wrestle a state-maximum five times.

A team trophy for first place will be awarded along with two Kenny Pfieffer Memorial Awards for the Outstanding Heavyweight and Outstanding Lightweight Wrestlers, as well as the Kenny Pfieffer Memorial Sportsmanship Award.

The defending tourney champ is Rockledge. Springstead defeated Rockledge last weekend at the Deltona Duals, 65-6.

Fort Pierce-Central won the 2009 event.

Second-year SRHS Head Coach Zach Sanford admitted this weekend’s event would be difficult to project with many of the team’s football players-turned wrestlers not in shape yet.

“Our goal is just to see where we’re at right now,” said Sanford. “Like a lot of teams, we just got our football players back. We’re one of those teams where we have nobody at 126-132, but after 138 we’ve got a ton of guys. We’re gonna fill 12 weights.

As far as the team to beat Saturday, Coach Sanford began with the defending tournament champs from Rockledge along with Port St. Lucie and Hagerty.

“It’s hard to predict without actually seeing them for the first time,” said Sanford, a Sebastian River alumnus.

Coach Sanford admits this weekend’s event was an easy sell to his team.

“It’s our first big tournament at home,” he said. “It’s time for our guys to make their mark. It’s the first time we get our starting lineup together in front of a big crowd. Come Saturday, it’s time to go to work.”

Leopards: 9 grapplers return

Hernando, which went 3-2 in last year’s Sebastian River Duals, posted a collective 39-31 won-lost slate.

Last year, only Jared Young and Zach Pritz went 5-0. The duo combined for nine pins.

Though HHS went 0-4 at the Valrico Duals at Bloomingdale High School, Young opened the campaign with a perfect 5-0 slate featuring five pins.

Pritz will make the trip but isn’t expected to compete due to an ACL knee injury suffered during a football game against Nature Coast Technical.

Seven other Leopards return to the Indian County event from last year including: Sean Thornton, Ricky Swain, Brennan Ertl, Nick Brewer, Zach Sullivan, Blaine Day and Jessie Gaudin.

Besides the injured Pritz, HHS will be without John MacGregor, who recently suffered a broken ankle and is out for the remainder of the season, and heavyweight Austin Neff, who is taking an ACT test on Saturday.

HHS is utilizing this event as a tune-up for next weekend’s 30th annual Brooksville-Kiwanis Invitational.

“Lineup-wise we’re OK,” noted HHS Assistant Coach and Hall of Famer Bill Combs Sr. “Losing MacGregor hurts because it affects our depth. But really when you look at us this lineup it ain’t bad.

According to Combs, this weekend’s goal is simple.

“We want to see our young kids continue to improve. We want to see them doing what they’re taught in practice,” emphasized Coach Combs. “It’s great to have the football players back but we realize it’s gonna take a while for them to get into wrestling shape.

“Next week is a big deal for our guys at Kiwanis,” added Combs. “This is our last chance before that meet.”
