LAKELAND –
The first day in Polk County’s “House of Pain,” aka the 49th annual FHSAA Finals, concluded following four rounds of action with the Hernando County’s original 16-member contingency whittled to 10 grapplers.

More importantly, Springstead with its six remaining grapplers leads Lakeland-Lake Gibson, 53.0-45.5, in the Class 2A team standings.

Springstead’s state-best, nine-man state crew lost three Friday including senior Joe Russo at 152 pounds, junior Corey Humphrey at 220 and sophomore Andrew Smith at 126 – who all exited following 1-2 runs.

With the dust settled after 10 hours at the Jenkins Arena, six Eagles will return Saturday including: senior Stephen Pavao at 120, junior Jordan Rivera at 138, and sophomores Matt Landgraff at 106, Michael McDonald at 113, Billy Swift at 160 and Conor Ross at 170.

As Springstead went 15-9 with seven pins, Landgraff, Rivera, and McDonald each went 2-0 to earn a trio of semifinal berths beginning at 11 a.m.

Landgraff (48-7) etched his 28th and 29th pins of the season on Friday, over Lely’s Mike Messina (3:21) and Homestead’s Olson Delisca (78 seconds).

Landgraff will face Archbishop McCarthy junior Radley Gillis (63-1).

“Today I did what I was supposed to do,” admitted the 15-year-old Landgraff, who placed sixth last year after going winless on Day 2 in 2012. “Making it to the finals is what Springstead wrestling is all about. My mindset tomorrow is not to have any regrets and not to look back at all. I’m not holding anything back.”

McDonald (47-3) folded Niceville’s Jack Frey in 98 seconds before winning by injury default against Archbishop McCarthy’s Jake Gillis.

McDonald, who went 1-2 last winter and did not place at states, faces Lake City-Columbia’s Cole Schreiber in the semis. McDonald solved Schreiber at the Knockout Classic at Kissimmee-Osceola during the holidays.

The two-time state placer Rivera earned his third straight state semifinal berth by solving Venice High’s Chris Trammel, 8-6, and Boca Raton-Olympic Heights’ Matt Sincoff, 8-6.

On Saturday, Rivera (43-4) will tangle against Palmetto Ridge freshman Joe Nadotti (46-5). Pavao, Swift and Ross all went 2-1. Ross chipped in his 27th and 28th pins of the season.

Nature Coast, which placed sixth last winter in Lakeland, is seventh at the midway point with 23.0 points.

All three of Nature Coast’s grapplers will return following a fine 6-1 run: seniors Sean Nguyen at 106, Brandon Vovan at 160 and Dylan Savoury at 182.

Nguyen and Vovan both went 2-0 to reach the semifinals. Nguyen (43-2) opened the meet with an injury default win over Fort-Myers-Cypress Lake’s Colten Thomas before pinning Olympic Heights’ John Cleristor in 1:44.

Nguyen, who placed fourth last winter, will tangle with Hallandale senior Randy Garay (14-8) on Saturday.

Vovan, in his first state tourney, blanked Nease’s Branden Wade, 4-0, before pinning Homestead’s Ripoll O’Connor in 4:36.

In Saturday’s semifinal Vovan (43-5) will tangle with Niceville’s Taylor Bartleson. Savoury returns following a 2-1 run.

After winning his opening match – a 1:40 pin over Lincoln’s Jason Osagie – Hernando junior Jesse Gaudin dropped a heartbreaking 4-3 decision in the final seconds to Tampa-Jesuit junior Austin Underwood, 4-3.

From the loser’s bracket, Gaudin remained alive with a 7-3 nod over Matanzas’ James Rumph.

“Losing to the Jesuit kid hurt; it hurt a lot,” said 17-year-old Gaudin. “I thought I had it. “He kind of surprised me. He’s a good wrestler; I’d love another shot at him. Tomorrow is all about finishing third – that’s the goal.”

In their first-ever state visits, both Central’s Josh Marquez and Jesus Nieves along with Weeki Wachee’s Dante Padilla all went 0-2.
