Two killed in wrong-way crash on U.S. 19 in Citrus County

Two women were killed Monday night when they were struck head-on by wrong-way driver on U.S. Highway 19 in Citrus County.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 9:45 p.m. when 51-year-old Marianne J. Campbell, of Fort Lauderdale was driving a 2002 Nissan Xterra southbound in the inside northbound lane of U.S. 19.

Campbell drove into the path of a 2009 Chevrolet HHR driven by 74-year-old Ruby Pearl Ray, of Nixa, Mo., striking her head-on.

Ray died at the scene, the FHP said. A passenger, 75-year-old Greta Overbay of Roachville, Ind., was transported to Seven Rivers Hospital, where she died from her injuries.

Campbell was airlifted to Ocala Regional Hospital, where she is listed in critical condition.

Investigators are determining whether Campbell was under the influence of alcohol, the FHP said.

It is uncertain where Campbell crossed over into the northbound lanes, the FHP said.
