Sheriff Announces Installation of Additional Permanent Drug Drop-Off Boxes

Spring Hill :

Sheriff Al Nienhuis is pleased to announce the installation of two additional permanent drug drop-off boxes. The two new boxes have been placed at the following locations:
– District Two Office – 7499 Forest Oaks Boulevard, Spring Hill, FL 34606 (located inside the lobby)
– Hernando County Detention Center – 16425 Spring Hill Drive, Spring Hill, FL 34609 (located on Northeast corner of the parking lot near the Inmate Release Pavilion).

Additional Permanent Drug

The original drug drop-off box is still situated inside the lobby at the main office located at 18900 Cortez Boulevard in Brooksville.

Citizens are able to properly dispose of unwanted, unused, and/or expired prescription and over the counter medications as well as veterinarian prescriptions.

The drop-off boxes in the main lobby of the Sheriff’s Office and the District Two Office are available during normal business hours. The drop-off box at the Detention Center is available 24/7. There is no cost to drop off unwanted/unused medications.

Sheriff Al Nienhuis said, “Although I had high expectations for our first drop box, the response has been overwhelming. These drop boxes are a way for our citizens to dispose of commonly abused drugs as soon as they are no longer needed by the patient. Doing so totally eliminates the possibility of them falling into the hands of a drug abuser or a child. Now that we have three locations, it allows almost every county resident to have a convenient location to dispose of unwanted medication. We would like to remind our citizens, however, that we can only accept pills and similar medications. Needles, liquids and inhalers must be disposed of at the county’s landfill.”

The new drug drop-off boxes will provide additional options for Hernando County residents to safely dispose of unwanted/unused medications. Our hope is to provide an increased awareness of prescription drug abuse and help keep potentially dangerous drugs out of the wrong hands.

The following items cannot be disposed of in the drop-off boxes and can be disposed of at the locations listed below:

– Needles, Sharps, and/or Syringes – Please take to the landfill at either 14450 Landfill Road in Brooksville or 2525 Osowaw Boulevard in Spring Hill.
– Any Liquids – Please take to the landfill at 14450 Landfill Road in Brooksville only.
– Inhalers – Please take to the landfill at 14450 Landfill Road in Brooksville only.
– These items will not be accepted at any of the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office locations.

Please keep in mind that the drop off boxes located at our facilities are small. If you have a very large quantity of unwanted medications, it may be best to go directly to a landfill near you, as we are unable to handle more than a few bottle at a time.
