Citizens are able to properly dispose of unwanted, unused, and/or expired prescription and over the counter medications as well as veterinarian prescriptions.

Just a reminder

The drop-off boxes in the main lobby of the Sheriff’s Office and the District Two Office are available during normal business hours. The drop-off box at the Detention Center is available 24/7. There is no cost to drop off unwanted/unused medications.

The (three) drug drop-off boxes provide Hernando County residents numerous options to safely dispose of unwanted/unused medications. Our hope is to provide an increased awareness of prescription drug abuse and help keep potentially dangerous drugs out of the wrong hands.

The following items cannot be disposed of in the drop-off boxes and can be disposed of at the locations listed below:

– Needles, Sharps, and/or Syringes – Please take to the landfill at either 14450 Landfill Road in Brooksville or 2525 Osowaw Boulevard in Spring Hill.
– Any Liquids – Please take to the landfill at 14450 Landfill Road in Brooksville only.
– Inhalers – Please take to the landfill at 14450 Landfill Road in Brooksville only.
– These items will not be accepted at any of the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office locations.

Please keep in mind that the drop off boxes located at our facilities are small. If you have a very large quantity of unwanted medications, it may be best to go directly to a landfill near you, as we are unable to handle more than a few bottles at a time.
