Family Dollar to open new Spring Hill store

SPRING HILL Family Dollar will conduct a site review with county building staffers this month, paving the way for a new store at the northwest corner of Deltona and Forest Oaks boulevards.

Located in a large residential area, the Spring Hill site meets the demographic criteria for the chain, said Charlie Aldrich, construction manager with Hunt Real Estate Services Inc, developer for Family Dollar.

The new 8,320-square-foot store will employ 15-20 people and will take about four months to build after the requisite approvals are obtained.

This store will join four other Family Dollars in Hernando County, including its most recent location near Spring Hill Drive and Marble Avenue.

Aldrich said many people prefer the convenience of the smaller stores for their inexpensive household needs. The economy is also driving expansion of the chain, he said.

The North Carolina-based chain’s planned move comes on the heels of a second-quarter fiscal report showing Family Dollar’s sales increased 17.7 percent to $2.89 billion.

“Our continued market share gains reflect the successful execution of our strategy to become more relevant to customers,” Howard Levine, the chain’s chairman and CEO said in a press release. “This quarter we delivered positive results despite financial pressures that continue to challenge our customers.

Family Dollar has 7,600 stores in 45 states and 50,000 employees nationwide. Its core customer is a female head of household in her mid 40s who makes less than $40,000 annually, according to the chain’s website.

Meanwhile, work is expected to start soon on a new Dollar General at the corner of U.S. 41 and Howell Avenue, in the triangle parcel near Damac Estates.

A check with the county building department shows the chain has been approved for a building permit and is only awaiting site approval and a few other check-offs on the county’s list.

Dollar General, which is expanding rapidly into Florida, is also building a store north of Portillo Road in Spring Hill.

Both Family Dollar and Dollar General feature a large selection of grocery items, clothes, toiletries, toys and books.
