Arrest Made In Home Invasion Robbery

On 04-13-2016 at approximately 6 a.m., Hernando County deputies were dispatched to a Home Invasion Robbery at 4456 Mariner Boulevard in Spring Hill.

The victim, David Acebey, advised deputies that shortly after his girlfriend left for work he was awakened with a flashlight and a gun being pointied at his head. He immediately identified the suspect as a former roommate, Carl Harris, as Harris did not have his face concealed.

Harris instructed Acebey to get out of bed. Harris reportedly wanted to talk to Acebey about a crime (Grand Theft) that he had been arrested for in March of 2016. When Harris vacated the home, Acebey reported to authorities that Harris stole $6,000. Sometime after Harris’ arrest, the two men allegedly made an agreement that if Harris paid the money back, Acebey would drop the charges. Harris wanted to know why the charges had not been dropped yet.

During the Home Invasion, Harris advised Acebey that he was “going to give him some incentive to drop the charges.” Armed with a gun, Harris demanded to know where certain property was located within the residence. Acebey pointed to what was requested. This allowed an opportunity for Acebey to escape from the residence.

Acebey ran from the residence with Harris following close behind, still holding the firearm. After running up and down the street several times, Harris returned to Acebey’s residence while Acebey remained outside. Acebey then observed a neighbor in her driveway and was able to flag her down for help. The neighbor allowed Acebey to use her cell phone to call authorities. During this time, Harris exited Acebey’s residence, walked around the neighbor’s car, then fled down a side street.

An extensive search was conducted of the area utilizing ground units, a K-9 team, and aviation. Harris could not be located. The units did locate a BB gun which closely resembled a Ruger semi-automatic handgun. Next to the BB gun, deputies located property belonging to the victim, reportedly stolen by the suspect.

Detectives continued to work leads on the case and continued to attempt tolocate Carl Harris, meeting with negative results.

On 04-19-16, Detective Chris Vascellaro was alerted by Deputy Christopher Davey at the Hernando County Court House that Carl Harris had arrived to his court appearance for the original charge of Grand Theft. Deputy Davey placed Harris under arrest and transported him to the Sheriff’s Office to be interviewed by detectives. Harris invoked his rights and did not make any statements relating to this offense.

Carl Harris B/M DOB/07-22-1983 was charged as follows:
– Home Invasion
– Witness Tampering
– Bond – $30,000.

The case remains under investigation.
